A murder mystery set in 1930s Latvia in the making
Riga, May 1934
Capital city of a country independent for under 16 years, lying between newly Nazi Germany and Stalin’s Soviet Union. In the throes of political turmoil. Parliament has been indefinitely suspended. A new authoritarian regime has seized power. Then a public figure is brutally murdered. Much to his surprise, Police Captain Brūno Staprāns, at odds with the regime and in increasing conflict at home, is assigned to the case. The more he delves into it, the more avenues seem to close off, as foreign agents, powerful figures and shadowy criminals constantly appear to be one step ahead. He begins to suspect he has been set up to fail, but is determined to uncover the truth, even if he risks losing more than his job.
